What I Hope This Blog Will Do for You
There is a saying from early Jewish tradition that paints a vivid picture of discipleship in the first century:
“May your house be a meeting place for the sages; become covered in the dust of their feet, and drink in their words with thirst” (Pirkei Avot 1:4).
For me, this ancient blessing captures the heart of what I hope this blog—and all my teaching—will accomplish. My aim is simple: to help you become a disciple of Jesus the Messiah by bringing you into the world in which He lived, taught, and called people to follow Him. When we understand His world, we understand His message. And when we understand His message, we can obey His commands with clarity and joy.
“May your house be a meeting place for the sages”
This line invites us to imagine opening our home to a teacher—welcoming them into our personal space, our rhythms, our daily life. It’s the world of Mary and Martha, who received the Master into their home and sat at His feet to learn.
Discipleship begins here: inviting Jesus into the center of your life, not as an occasional guest but as the One whose presence shapes your priorities, your decisions, and your inner world. When He enters the “house” of your life, He teaches, corrects, comforts, and transforms.
“Become covered in the dust of their feet”
In the first century, disciples followed their rabbi so closely that the dust kicked up from his sandals would settle on their clothing. It was a badge of honor—evidence that they walked where he walked.
To follow Jesus this closely, we must step into His world: the geography He traversed, the Scriptures He quoted, the feasts He celebrated, the debates He entered, the expectations His people carried. The closer we walk behind Him, the more His dust settles on us—His ways, His worldview, His priorities.
Understanding the world of the Bible isn’t an academic exercise. It’s a way of drawing near to the Rabbi.
“Drink in their words with thirst”
A thirsty soul pays attention. It listens with urgency. It receives every word as life.
Jesus’ words are living water. But to drink them deeply, we must hear them as His original audience did—within the cultural, linguistic, and spiritual world that shaped their meaning. When we read Scripture with that kind of attentiveness, the teachings of Jesus become clearer, richer, and more compelling.
This is why I write.
My Hope for You
My hope is that this blog becomes a place where:
Your house becomes a meeting place for the Master, where His presence is welcomed and His teaching is cherished.
You walk closely enough behind Jesus that His dust—His way of life—begins to cling to you.
You drink His words with thirst, discovering how understanding His world opens the door to deeper obedience, deeper worship, and deeper transformation.
The world of the Bible is not distant. It is waiting to be rediscovered. And as you rediscover it, you will rediscover Jesus Himself—more clearly, more vividly, and more personally.
